Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb addressed the National Assembly to wrap up discussions on the federal budget for FY25 on Tuesday. He announced a bonus equivalent to three months’ basic pay for the staff and officers of the National Assembly and Senate.
The finance minister emphasized that the budget is based on a domestic reform plan aimed at steering the country out of its current economic challenges.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 13 percent and implementing reforms in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the energy sector.
Aurangzeb noted that Rs. 350 billion has been allocated in the Rs. 1,500 billion Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), with 81 percent earmarked for ongoing projects.
The minister highlighted the government’s efforts in reducing inflation and expressed a desire for the current IMF program under discussion to be the final one.
He also mentioned the government’s goal to alleviate the pension burden and reduce overall expenditures.
