A scandal involving fake anti-polio vaccinations has been uncovered in Balochistan, revealing a troubling practice where some parents, in collusion with polio workers, avoided administering the actual polio drops to their children while falsely marking their fingers to indicate vaccination.
The Balochistan Health Department has responded by taking action against over 500 workers implicated in this fraudulent scheme. The revelation is particularly concerning given that Balochistan had been polio-free for two years, but has recently experienced a resurgence of the virus, with 12 children contracting polio in the past eight months.
The provincial health department has raised alarms about the deteriorating situation. Inamul Haque, Coordinator of the Balochistan Emergency Operation Center, highlighted that both migration and resistance from some parents are significant challenges to polio eradication efforts. He emphasized that the fake vaccination campaign has been a major factor in the increase of polio cases.
Tragically, three children affected by polio have succumbed to the disease. This crisis underscores the urgent need for effective measures to combat the spread of polio and ensure the integrity of vaccination programs.
