Experience Delivery Services Beyond Your Doorstep, Even at the Summit of the World’s Highest Peaks

Imagine summoning a delivery service at 6,000 meters altitude. This is now a reality thanks to cutting-edge drone technology reaching Mount Everest’s towering heights, revolutionizing delivery experiences in the world’s highest locales.

DJI partnered with Nepalese drone service company Airlift, video production company 8KRAW, and certified mountain guide Mingma Gyalje Sherpa to conduct the world’s first successful drone delivery trials on Mount Everest (Mount Qomolangma).

During these tests, drones successfully transported three oxygen bottles and 1.5kg of supplies from Everest Base Camp to Camp 1 (5,300-6,000m ASL). They also carried trash back down on the return trip.

This marks the first time drones have completed round-trip transportation of equipment and waste between Everest Base Camp and Camp 1, separated by the perilous Khumbu Icefall, a hazardous stretch during the ascent. Helicopters, while capable in theory, are rarely used due to high risks and costs.

Traditionally, local Sherpa guides bear the responsibility of transporting supplies and clearing trash on Everest, making dangerous journeys across the icefall up to 30 times a season. They transport oxygen bottles, gas canisters, tents, food, and ropes.

The hazardous crossings usually occur at night when temperatures are lowest and ice conditions are stable. Unmodified drones can carry 15kg between camps in just 12 minutes for a round trip, day or night. These delivery drones aim to alleviate the burdens on Sherpas, who repeatedly risk their lives navigating the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.
