Emirates Flight Attendant Faces Jail After Attempting Suicide Following Abuse by Husband

An Emirates flight attendant from Ireland, Tori Towey, is facing possible imprisonment in Dubai after trying to take her own life. This followed severe abuse from her South African husband, who was not detained by police.

The 28-year-old, from Boyle, Co Roscommon, moved to Dubai in April 2023 for her job with Emirates. After marrying her husband, their relationship quickly became abusive.

Following a violent incident at home, where her husband allegedly beat, threatened, and tortured her, Tori was taken to the hospital. Despite filing a police report and receiving time off work, she was later hit with a travel ban and could not return to Ireland.

Tori attempted suicide due to the continued abuse but was instead taken to Al Barsha police station, where she now faces charges of alcohol consumption and attempted suicide. Her court hearing is set for July 18.

Radha Stirling from the group Detained in Dubai has criticized the lack of protection and assistance provided to Tori, calling for the charges to be dropped. The Irish embassy is now involved and has arranged legal support for her.

Tori’s family hopes that publicizing her case will lead to her release and return home.
