The Lahore High Court (LHC) has received a challenge to the Election Amendment Act 2024, which restricts independent lawmakers from switching political parties.
Citizen Mushkoor Hussain, represented by advocate Nadeem Sarwar, has filed a petition against the federal government, Election Commission, President, and Prime Minister. The petitioner argues that the amendments to the Election Act were implemented to reverse a Supreme Court decision and claims they are unconstitutional. The petition requests that the LHC nullify the amendments and issue a stay order to prevent their implementation until a final decision is made.
The petition asserts that the amendments, which were signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari and subsequently sent to the Senate Secretariat for a gazette notification, were designed to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling. The Election Amendment Act 2024 aims to prevent independent lawmakers from changing parties.
