US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Donald Lu, has reaffirmed America’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic recovery and counter-terrorism efforts. Speaking on Thursday, Lu emphasized the close collaboration between the US, the Pakistan Army, and the government in tackling terrorism, stating, “America wants Pakistan to succeed.”
After a meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Lu expressed optimism about Pakistan’s economic progress. “We are very encouraged by the economic recovery that Pakistan is undergoing. This is beneficial for every Pakistani,” he remarked, underlining that the reforms being implemented are crucial for the nation’s future.
Lu acknowledged the strong ties with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and the broader Pakistani populace. He highlighted their discussions on ambitious economic plans and reform strategies aimed at achieving long-term stability, noting, “These reforms are not easy, but they represent the future of Pakistan.”
His remarks come on the heels of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approving a $7 billion loan for Pakistan, with nearly $1 billion released immediately to help address economic challenges. The IMF noted that Pakistan’s growth rate has reached 2.4% in the last fiscal year, with inflation significantly declining to single digits.
Lu reiterated that the US is keen to support Pakistan’s efforts for financial stability and growth, reinforcing a partnership that looks to strengthen both nations.
What are your thoughts on this collaboration? How might these developments impact Pakistan’s future?
