Aug 31, 2024

The immediate threat from Cyclone Asna has receded for Karachi as the storm, which originated in the Arabian Sea, starts to move away from the city.

As of now, Cyclone Asna is positioned roughly 200 kilometers southwest of Karachi, heading westward towards Muscat and Oman, where it is expected to dissipate, according to the Met Department. Omani media reports indicate that the cyclone is still about 900 kilometers from Oman’s coast, with winds reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour. Rain is anticipated in Oman’s coastal areas when the cyclone is about 760 kilometers away.

Despite Karachi no longer being in the cyclone’s direct path, the city and nearby regions are still experiencing severe weather. The Met Department forecasts that Karachi will see varying intensities of rain over the next two days, with winds blowing at 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, influenced by the cyclone’s proximity.
