Country Expected to Experience Above-Average Monsoon Rainfall

The Meteorological Office predicts that most parts of the country will experience more rainfall than usual during the monsoon season from June to August this year.

According to the forecast, central and northern Punjab, as well as southern Sindh, are likely to receive above-average rainfall. Northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan may have normal rainfall, while most parts of Balochistan may experience slightly more rain than usual.

The second half of the monsoon season is expected to be wetter than the first half.

During the day, temperatures will be mostly normal, but northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan may experience warmer than usual temperatures. Nighttime temperatures are expected to be higher than usual in most areas, especially in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and southwestern Balochistan.

High temperatures in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir may lead to faster snowmelt, increasing river flow. However, rainfall towards the end of the season is expected to normalize high temperatures.

The season may bring strong winds, dust storms, and gusts.

Above-average rainfall in the catchment areas of major rivers may lead to river flooding. Flash flooding is expected in hill torrents of Koh-e-Suleman and urban flooding in major cities in Sindh, Punjab, AJK, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to heavy rainfall.

The Meteorological Department also warns of a likelihood of heatwaves in the plain areas of the country, especially in the southern half, in June.
