The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at curbing hefty electricity expenses by transitioning its infrastructure to solar power, including buildings, street lights, tube wells, and water pumps.

This decision aligns with the CDA’s broader strategy to foster sustainability and cost-effectiveness. The CDA Board has approved a feasibility study for the solarization project, anticipating monthly savings of Rs. 250 million, according to CDA sources.

The project will unfold in three phases: initially focusing on converting tube wells and water pumps to solar power, followed by street lights, and eventually transitioning CDA buildings.

The initiative targets the installation of solar panels on tube wells and waterworks across the capital, generating 4.5 megawatts of electricity. This solar system is anticipated to power the waterworks and tube wells for the next 25 years, with the installation cost of Rs. 80 million expected to be recouped within the first four years.

Member Engineering Khalid Hafeez presented the project summary to the CDA Board, emphasizing the necessity of a thorough feasibility study. The board echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for comprehensive evaluation encompassing site characteristics, detailed system design, technical and financial assessments, regulatory compliance, integration with existing infrastructure, and monitoring and maintenance protocols to ensure optimal outcomes.

Following the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules of 2004, the board has resolved to conduct this feasibility study. The study will finalize the Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power installation schemes, ensuring adherence to all technical and regulatory requirements for a successful transition to solar power.
