On Thursday, environmental activists disrupted Germany’s busiest airport, leading to the cancellation of 270 flights. The protest aimed to highlight climate change issues during the busy summer vacation period.
Activists breached security fences at Frankfurt Airport early in the morning, causing a temporary halt in operations. Flights resumed by 7:50am, but 270 out of 1,400 scheduled flights were canceled, according to airport operator Fraport.
Seven activists damaged the airport’s fence and attached themselves to the tarmac, while an eighth attached themselves to the fence. All eight were detained.
The groups involved plan to target airports across Europe to protest the connection between fossil fuels and climate change, urging governments to stop fossil fuel use by 2030.
This protest followed another by the Last Generation group, which disrupted Cologne-Bonn Airport the day before. Similar protests also occurred in Finland, Norway, Switzerland, and Spain.
In response, the German Cabinet has proposed a bill to impose stricter penalties for airport security breaches, potentially resulting in up to two years in prison.
