The Times Higher Education (THE) World’s Young University Rankings 2024 includes 76 Pakistani universities. Among these, 33 have received rankings from THE, while the rest have been designated as ‘reporter’ status. Despite Pakistan’s notable presence with 76 universities listed, none have made it to the top 100, underscoring the challenges confronting the country’s higher education sector.

Here’s a breakdown of the Pakistani universities included in the Young University Rankings, which recognize the world’s best universities aged 50 years or younger, with the rest designated as ‘Reporter’ status.

The 2024 ranking encompasses 673 universities, an increase from 605 in 2023, with an additional 499 institutions listed as ‘reporters,’ indicating that they provided data but did not meet eligibility criteria for ranking.

For the second consecutive year, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, holds the top spot.

Hong Kong maintains a significant presence in the top 10, although individual university performance varies. While the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology drops to third place from second, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University slips to seventh from fourth, the City University of Hong Kong climbs two spots to fourth.

Meanwhile, France’s leading institutions all demonstrate improvement, with Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris, its top performer, rising to second place from third last year.

Turkey leads with the highest number of ranked institutions at 58, followed by India with 55 and Iran with 46.

The number of territories represented in the rankings increases to 79, one more than in 2023, with Ghana and Peru making their debut.
