Hungary is experiencing a labor shortage in several key industries, including cleaning, construction, engineering, manufacturing, agriculture, and personal care. According to Schengen.News, this shortage has led to an increase in job vacancies. In 2023, Hungary had 79,000 job openings, with manufacturing having the most vacancies at over 19,000.
The EURES report identifies many high-demand occupations in Hungary, such as:
Elementary workers
Messengers and package deliverers
Refuse sorters
Garbage and recycling collectors
Building and civil engineering laborers
Forestry and crop farm laborers
Various cleaning workers
Sewing machine operators and related workers
Cabinet-makers
Food preparers like butchers and fishmongers
Handicraft workers
Despite these opportunities, Hungary has tightened immigration rules for foreign workers. New policies restrict work permits to specific employers and job roles, and guest worker permits can now only be renewed for up to three years.
